Which region in Europe has just been voted the best beach destination in the world?
Nicknamed the “California of Europe”, the Algarve, in southern Portugal, has been named the “World’s Leading Beach Destination” at the World Travel Awards. With around 150 beaches lined with cliffs and record levels of sunshine, it has become one of the most fashionable destinations in Europe.

At a time when international tensions are somewhat limiting the choice of sunny destinations, Europe is emerging as the best alternative. Among the top options is Portugal, and more specifically the Algarve. The Algarve coastline stretches for 300 kilometres, featuring coves of golden sand, cliffs, caves, and rocky shores bordered by crystal clear waters. With more than 300 days of sunshine per year, it is considered the sunniest destination in Europe.
From Odeceixe to Vila Real de Santo António, the coastal belt benefits from a Mediterranean microclimate, with temperatures ranging between 15°C in winter and 30°C in summer. Between Praia da Falésia, famous for its dramatic red cliffs, and Praia da Marinha, the region rivals some of the world’s most stunning coastlines. It is therefore no surprise that it has been awarded the title of “World’s Leading Beach Destination” at the World Travel Awards, often referred to as the “Oscars of tourism”, for the fourth time.
Environmental quality, gastronomy and hospitality
The awards keep coming. In 2025, 85 beaches in the Algarve received the Blue Flag, the European symbol of quality for bathers. Meanwhile, 64 beaches were awarded the Gold Quality distinction, recognising seaside areas with the best water quality, and 14 beaches were also named Zero Pollution sites.
In addition, two Algarve beaches ranked among the 25 Best Beaches in Europe in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice 2020 ranking: Praia da Falésia, in 22nd place, and Praia da Rocha, in 24th place.

The Algarve has also received several other awards for its hospitality, sustainability efforts, and world class golf courses. The region clearly generates enthusiasm, and for good reason. Beyond its paradisiacal beaches, the Algarve is home to charming seaside towns and villages such as Lagos and Tavira, where visitors can enjoy grilled fish and cataplanas of seafood, a traditional fish stew, after a day by the sea. It is also worth noting that in their most recent edition, the World Travel Awards granted 12 awards to Portugal, including Best Destination in Europe.
Finally, the Algarve attracts many travellers thanks to its accessibility. Outside the peak season, flights to Faro can be found for less than 40 euros. Those with more time can also reach the Algarve by car, crossing Spain.
