Trees for small gardens: these narrow varieties can fit even in limited spaces
Having your own tree in the garden, on the terrace or in a small front garden does not always have to remain a dream. There are actually several trees that are not only particularly small, but also space-saving.

There is a wide variety of small trees that grow upwards in a columnar shape or with a slightly rounded form.
Narrow or rounded, these trees can grow upwards
Small and relatively narrow plots are ideal for trees such as the columnar hornbeam, columnar hawthorn or columnar rowan. They grow upwards in a slender form and provide little shade. They can quickly gain height. However, as they age, they can change shape, becoming somewhat more egg-shaped and developing a rounded crown.
Some varieties can still develop a crown 5 metres wide
For a somewhat larger garden or for the terrace, so-called ball-shaped trees are suitable. The best-known trees are the ball maple, the ball-shaped trumpet tree and the ball-shaped robinia. Small trees such as the red hawthorn or purple-leaved plum tend to grow upwards in a rounded shape. All ball-shaped trees can develop a crown around five metres wide as they mature.

Smaller varieties with a crown diameter of up to 2.5 metres include the ball-shaped steppe cherry, the ball-shaped swamp oak and a specially bred mini apple tree, such as Golden Hornet or Crony® from the Häberli brand.
Small apple trees have a certain something
Last but not least, all types of trees require sufficient care and, particularly at the beginning, regular watering. Small trees also need to be pruned and shaped. It is advisable to seek advice from specialists at a garden centre or tree nursery.
The timing and amount of pruning can vary depending on the location and underlying conditions.
Pruning varies depending on the type of tree
Fruit trees should generally be pruned lightly. Every part of the tree should be able to receive light and air.
In short, it is recommended that fruit trees are pruned in late winter and early spring, such as in February or March.
Other types of trees should generally be pruned in autumn and winter.
