Death Valley’s 2026 Wildflower Bloom Is the Best Since the 2016 Superbloom
Death Valley National Park is bursting with color as a major wildflower bloom unfolds in March 2026. It is the park’s most vibrant display since the famed 2016 Superbloom. While the desert landscape is filled with shades of yellow and purple, more blooms expected in the coming weeks.

With spring on the horizon, the desert is waking up in color. In 2026, Death Valley National Park is glowing with a blanket of wildflowers. It is the park’s most spectacular bloom since the 2016 Superbloom.
What Is Happening Now
According to the Death Valley National Park, the low-elevation flowers are blooming throughout the park right now and are expected to last until mid to late March, depending on the weather. However, it is unclear how long the lower-elevation bloom will last, as it depends heavily on upcoming weather patterns. Higher elevations in the park are expected to bloom from April through June.
Elliot McGucken, a Los Angeles-based photographer who has seen the 2016 Super-bloom, told the San Francisco Chronicle that this is the best bloom he has ever seen.
Perfect Conditions: Record Fall Rainfall and a Wet Winter Set the Stage
Park officials said that perfect environmental conditions, including record fall rainfall and a wet winter, have triggered a rare transformation of the desert landscape. While the wet weather stimulated germination, record-breaking high temperatures have accelerated growth and flowering.
Current bloom Locations:
- Near North Badwater Road, between CA-190 and Badwater Basin: Desert Gold and Brown-eyed Primrose.
- Near Ashford Mill on South Badwater Road: Desert Gold, Sand Verbena, Five Spot, and Brown-eyed Primrose.
- Along the Beatty Cutoff: Phacelia, Desert Gold, and Gravel Ghost add splashes of color across the landscape.
Death Valley’s most remarkable displays, known as Superblooms, occurred in 2016.

The park is not calling the 2026 display a full super-bloom, but some localized areas could qualify, Jennette Jurado, the supervisory park ranger, told the San Francisco Chronicle. According to the park’s website, the most recent super-blooms in Death Valley occurred in 2016, 2005, and 1998.
During the 2016 Superbloom, hundreds of thousands of tourists visited Death Valley to see the desert floor come alive with a spectacular display of wildflowers.
The number of visitors this year is expected to rise. According to Jurado, March is usually the park’s busiest month, and visitor numbers this past week were 20% higher than last year.
